HFO Engine Power Plant Complete Operation

Now we will discuss the Operation of HFO Engine Power Plant in complete details

Operation of HFO Engine Power Plant :

HFO engine power plant operates on the HFO, the start and stop operation are performed using the Diesel fuel. Because due to the viscosity of HFO it can accumulate/freeze in the engine and cause trouble in the operation of the engine so that is why the start and stop of the HFO engine is performed using the Diesel Oil.  Diesel oil can also be used in the case of HFO supply is not available but the fuel unit of the plant increased around double of the HFO fuel unit cost.

So, First Let’s see How is HFO fuel is supplied to the engine Fuel nozzle?

First of all, HFO is unloaded from the HFO carrying tanker through the HFO unloading pump and is directly supplied to Main HFO storage Tank. Then this fuel is transfer to HFO Settling/Buffer tank using the HFO transfer Pump. After the buffer tank Fuel is supplied to HFO purifier without the use of the transfer Pump. After purification, fuel is supplied to the Day/ Service Tank. Now from the Day tank fuel is supplied to the Booster Unit, which provides the fuel to the Engine with a specified pressure and viscosity.

Now let’s see, How is diesel oil is supplied to the Engine ?.
Diesel Oil is unloaded using the unloaded pump from the diesel oil-carrying tanker and is supplied to the Diesel oil storage Tank. Then using the transfer pump it is supplied to the day Tank. Then after this, it is supplied to the Booster Unit which sends this to the engine.

Now How air is supplied to the HFO engine.
First of all, the air is filtered using the filter mostly oil bath filter, then through ducting, this is supplied to the turbocharger inside of the HFO Engine. Which compresses this air, the temperature of the air increases then this air moves to the charge air cooler which cools the air and hence provides the more dense air to the Combustion Cylinder.

Now both air and fuel are supplied to the cylinder and we just have to rotate the engine in order to start the engine.
For the rotation of the engine, we used compressed air. A compressor is used with the vessel that is used stores the compressed air and provides it to the engine to start the ignition process.

Now during the running process, we need to cool, the engine. For this purpose, we used the cooling tower that cools the engine water by use of the Heat exchanger. There are two heat exchanger that is used to cools the engine one is LT (Low Temperature) Heat exchanger and other one is HT(High Temperature), the Heat exchanger.

Electricity is normally generated at 11 KV. It is first supplied to VCB (Vacuum Circuit Breaker) through it is supplied to the Outgoing feeder. In order to provide the supply to auxiliary equipment like booster Unit, Purifier, we used an auxiliary transformer that transforms this 11KV to 440V and supplied this to the MCC panel.

We also used a Black start Diesel Generator. When we want to operate the plant we first provide the supply to all auxiliary equipment using the black start diesel generator and the steam is produced through the boiler and is provided to the HFO tank to maintain the viscosity of the furnace oil.
